An Emergency Grant from The Safeway Foundation Replaces Our Team’s Stolen Equipment.
Head Over Heels Athletic Arts’ competitive girls’ gymnastics team traveled to San Diego on the weekend of January 25 – 27, 2013 to attend the San Diego Classic Gymnastics Meet. The competition was a great success with both our Level 8 and Level 9 teams placing as the First Place Team in their divisions as well as many individuals earning high scores. To celebrate our young athletes along with their coaches and parents went to the San Diego Zoo to enjoy the rest of the day before heading to the airport. Upon returning to the parking lot they found that one of the rented passenger vans had been broken into. Several backpacks and carry on bags had been stolen. The backpacks contained the girls’ competition leotards and warm up suits, their grips and wrist guards, and all of their homework, personal items and good luck charms. The girls were to attend competitions for the next two weekends. The loss of the grips and other equipment was a devastating loss.
The subsequent competitions would not have been possible without everything being replaced immediately. Jacky Carlton, mother of one of the Head Over Heels (HOH) team girls, informed The Safeway Foundation of the loss. The Safeway Foundation came to the rescue with an emergency grant for $1,000. Within the week all the equipment was replaced. The Head Over Heels Girls’ Level 8 and Level 9 Teams went on to win first place at the WOGA Classic in Texas, a very important competition attended by many of the top gymnasts in the country. As of the WOGA competition the Head Over Heels Level 8 Team became the top Level 8 team in the US.
Head Over Heels Athletic Arts sincerely thanks The Safeway Foundation for their generosity. For more information on The Safeway Foundation go to www.safewayfoundation.org.
